15 pictures decoding Diljit Dosanjhs more-is-more style
The only thing that rivals Diljit Dosanjh′s love for a certain blonde by the name of Kylie Jenner, is his love for labels. In the three years since he made his debut in Bollywood with Udta Punjab, the singer-turned-actor′s signature style has become daring and is no small way fuelled by his love for all things Gucci. From fresh-off-the-runway looks to the latest Yeezy drops, his maximalist manifesto has him setting his sights beyond the conventional. "Yeh India mein woh cheezein bhejengey jo do mahine pehle khatam ho chuki hai… I love London. I simply take a mahak of how interestingly the clothes have been styled by people in fashion and do my own thing. Main same nahi karta; woh copy-paste ho jata hai," he told Vogue.
Today, his has earned him the attention of other fashion icons on the scene as well. In a recent episode of No Filter Neha 3, Karan Johar commiserated, "I think we′re both crazy shoppers and we invariably land up wearing the same clothes because we love the same brands. I′m also an online shopper, so I go through this process of buying these things and wearing them on an occasion. But Diljit buys and wears it immediately and puts up an image. So, we had this faux fur jacket and I was saving it for my big photo opportunity time when I was travelling to Europe, and suddenly the night before I take that flight, I see the image uploaded by Diljit. I called Nikita, my stylist, and I′m like, "I′m shattered, I′m broken and I′m totally like, Channa Mereya right now because I wanted to wear this jacket.′ I was so upset, it broke my heart."
Ahead, we take taking a closer look at his more-is-more aesthetic.
Loud-and-proud neon hues jostle for space with oversized silhouettes in his wardrobe, and his flair for drama isn′t just restricted to the stage-a casual event during the day could call for anything from a printed Hawaiian shirt from Balenciaga to a hooded bomber jacket from the cult-favourite label, Vetements. Usually a fan of standout hues, on those days when he′s looking to indulge his quieter side, he takes his whites with embroidered Bart Simpson motifs from Off-White. A self-professed fan of Virgil Abloh′s unconventional approach to street style, his discerning eye has also found a winner in the indie design collective, Ader Error, that is touted as South Korea′s answer to Vetements. The star-studded lineup in his wardrobe is rivalled by his sneaker collection, featuring iconic names such as Gucci x Dapper Dan and multiple Air Jordans. Undaunted by the spectre of public opinion, he took the ugly sneakers trend for a spin by picking up a chunky pair of Balenciaga Triple S kicks. When he′s looking to make heads turn, he calls upon statement high tops from Maison Margiela to cement his status as a street style icon.
When in front of the spotlight, Dosanjh′s take-no-prisoners style has him opting for maximalist silhouettes in a palette of traffic-stopping hues. The singer notably took to the stage in a colour-blocked Balenciaga track jacket, while his chevron Gucci jacket remains another favourite with fans. The crowning glory in his wardrobe, however, is reserved for the Gucci-Dapper Dan Hercules necklace, embossed with a sculpted mask and polished to a vintage gold finish. Further notes on the versatility of the statement piece can be found on his Instagram, where he accessorised it with first, a Versace silk pyjama suit and later, a suede sweatshirt from the Harlem designer′s limited-edition collection.
